Mukunga Estate sits on the edge of the Aberdare forest in Kiambu County, one of Kenya's most renowned coffee growing regions. Established in 1970 and owned by Hanner Wanjiku Mukunga, the estate benefits from rich red volcanic soils, reliable rainfall, and elevations reaching up to 1850 meters above sea level. Surrounded by indigenous trees and abundant wildlife, the farm is deeply connected to its natural environment, with a strong focus on preserving the biodiversity that makes this region so unique.
This lot comes to us through Dorman Coffee, one of Kenya's most respected coffee exporters and quality focused sourcing partners. Through our work with Dorman's auction program, we are able to access exceptional estate lots that highlight the diversity and potential of Kenyan coffee.
For this washed lot, only ripe cherries are selectively hand harvested before being depulped and transferred to open fermentation tanks. The coffee undergoes 24 hours of dry fermentation, allowing the remaining mucilage to break down naturally before being thoroughly washed. The parchment is then submerged in clean water for an additional 24 hours, a traditional Kenyan step that enhances clarity and cup structure. Following fermentation, the coffee is dried on raised beds for 10 to 18 days, depending on weather conditions, allowing for slow and even moisture reduction.
