The Story:
Ibutiti Estate, established in 1978 by Mr. William Gatuhi Murathe, is a renowned coffee farm located in the heart of the Kiria-ini sublocation in Gatanga, Murang’a County, Kenya. Managed by Mercy Wambui Gatuhi, the estate thrives in rich, red volcanic soils at an elevation of 1,750 to 1,800 meters. The farm grows the Ruiru 11 variety, known for its resistance to disease and high-quality cup profile. During peak seasons, up to 400 local workers carefully hand-pick cherries at their peak ripeness to ensure quality.
After harvest, the cherries are taken to the wet mill, where they are sorted by hand before being pulped with clean water to remove the outer fruit. The beans are then fermented overnight, thoroughly washed, and sorted by density. Finally, the beans are sun-dried on raised tables, monitored closely to ensure the perfect moisture content is achieved.
